It almost sounds like a woodpecker but could be any one of different species of bird. The best thing to do would be to get a field guide of birds in your area and look at the many photos to find out what you have there. Its a great hobby and you would be surprised at how many species there are around!

Most of the pictures I searched of the bird you described were photographed in MD. Check this site out though because I really thought I was answering a question from the US. I have a few tiels that are from your part of the world, now the ones I have are part of my world, such lovely companions.

That is a vauge description. For us to figure out what it was, we need the body size, etc. How big was it? Depending on its size, it can be a number of species.
