To find alternate FOOD sources. They can fly thousands of miles to find berries and insects that are just ripening or hatching in the southern hemisphere. Or just flying from Canada to Florida.
It's all about Eating!! Then they return in the spring, build a nest, mate, and the young are old enough to fly south to avoid the NEXT winter.

Not sure what this has to do with mobile phones...Birds fly South because most birds are warm blooded. They cannot handle the cold temperatures. So they fly where it is warmer.

birds fly to the south in the winter to escape the cold and find food sorces (because of the cold food will be rare )
so birds may even travel around half around the globe as such in the case of the artic ferns

I agree with Rich. It's simply too far for their little legs to carry them.

There's just one problem. Ours don't fly south. If they did, they'd reach Antarctica first. So the choose to fly north.
