You can use powered sugar and some water and whip that up and you get icing. OR why don't you just go to the store and buy the small Betty Crocker containers or use the tubes that you can screw on the different tips to make your cake more interesting.

Once your tube is empty, cut off the back end of it, wash it out really well and then you can add a different color of frosting from the Betty Crocker container into the tube. Screw on a selected fancy tip and fold over the back where you cut it off and start frosting/designing.

Here are two good recipe's for icing.
Also, a good baking website is http://baking.about.com

Chocolate Icing:

INGREDIENTS
4 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons milk
1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS
In a saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar over medium heat. Stir until sugar is dissolved, then add milk. Bring to a boil and remove from heat.
Sift together cocoa and confectioners sugar. Blend into butter mixture and add vanilla. If consistency is too stiff, add more milk.
Spread Quickly over cooled cake, as frosting will set up very fast.

Wilton's Buttercream Icing Recipe:

INGREDIENTS
1 lb. (1 box) confectioners 10X sugar (Domino was recommended)
1 tablespoon Wilton Meringue Powder
1 cup solid vegetable shortening (Snowdrift was recommended because it's the whitest)
2 tablespoons water, warm
1/2 teaspoon white popcorn salt
1 teaspoon Wilton's clear vanilla extract
1 teaspoon light Karo syrup
icing colors

DIRECTIONS
Sift the confectioners sugar and meringue powder into a large mixing bowl and set aside. Cream the shortening. Dissolve the salt in the warm water. Add the water and extract to the shortening and mix. Gradually add the sugar, no more that 1 cup at a time, stopping to scrape the sides of the bowl. With a hand mixer, mix for 5 minutes on medium speed. With a stand-up mixer, mix on low for 2 minutes.
