I'm a smoker, but I have no problem with not-smoking when I go out to dinner. The bars, however, that's a different story. I live in Washington State, where the ban was inacted not long ago. 25feet from public or PRIVATE entryway's. That bites, the state telling a private business owner--who might smoke--they must stand no less then 25ft from their own business doorstep!! That's absurd.
However, the smoking ban has been a BOON for all the Tribal casinos in the state. Governor tried to pursuade Tribal leaders to follow the state's footsteps and they laughed at her.
Many bars/taverns have closed down, others have built outside areas for their smoking customers.
There's so much talk about second=hand smoke--let's quit driving cars and go back to horse-and-buggy then. There's alot more vehicle exhaust going into the atmosphere than cigarette smoke.

I am a smoker and when the restaurants go totally smoke free, I will be eating at home ALL the time. I have a lot of pain on a continuous basis and a cigarette calms me and relaxes me which is something I like.
I wonder at the common sense of those who get all in a dither if they have to eat in a restaurant where there is a smoking area but they have no problem getting in their cars and taking the very real chance of getting killed by a drunk driver on the way home. And while they're at the restaurant they don't give a thought to the fact that the food is being handled by people with HIV, STD's, colds, flu, and dirty hands because they didn't wash after using the restroom.

Smoking is a bad nasty habit and everyone should quit. However smoking is legal and no one should try to force any business to be non-smoking. That means if a restaurant wants to allow smoking that is up to the owner of the restaurant. He can pay higher insurance payments and be responsible for his place of business. It is my choice as a consumer as to weather or not I will go into his restaurant. I can say I don't want to go there because he allows smoking. Out doors is trickier. At school functions even if they are outside you cannot smoke and that is fine because we do not want to teach our children to smoke. If smokers were nicer about disposing of their butts I wouldn't care if they smoked in parks or on the sidewalks but they are not. So I do not have a problem with banning smoking in parks or in common areas. The law should have nothing to say about smoking once you close your front door. Then it is your private business. Even if you have children if you choose to smoke at home it is your business. Though I would hope that parents would go into their back yard to smoke.

smoking ban is just the beginning of the liberal movement to invade your life, next guns, coffee, sodas, fattening foods, say good bye to micky D's, Burger king, then beer and whiskey, whatever they can make bogus stats on like the second hand smoke kills 60,000 a year, absolutely no evidence to support this , just bogus left wing stats throw all over the liberal media, to let the gullable masses believe it, if you don't do anything else in this world, stop believing all this crap the media is throwing at you, do your research if you have a problem with something, it's all right in front of you on line, my father always told "don't believe nothing you hear and half of what you see.", i know you are asking , what do you mean by what i see, well, have you ever seen a man pull a rabbit out of his hat. to the answr above that says we should have our own health plan, o.k., i'll buy that as long as the overwieght people have theirs, the drugie'shave theirs, the alcoholic's have theirs, abortion have theirs, etc.

Washington State has a smoking ban. No smoking in any public establishment AND 25 feet or more away from any door. This is incredibly stupid. If you know a place is a smoking establishment and you don't wanna breath in 2nd hand smoke - DON'T GO THERE ... wow - what a concept.

Liberal--leave people alone.
And not just because people should be able to make their own choices. The anti-smoking crusade is simply one more element of the right-wing effort to control our society.
And the so-called "secondhand smoke" scare is not based on scientific findings--the actual research says the minimal exposure people get in public places isn't dangerous. People should try looking up the actual studies, instead of relying on what some ant-smoking nazi says the reports say.

I assume we're all cool with having smoking banned in government offices, where non-smokers HAVE to go to transact their business, right?
But some have a problem with banning it in restaurants. Nothing I want more with a $30-$50 meal than cigarette smoke. Mmmmm, yummy.
And, another person posted,"some of the same people who want to ban smoking are also screaming about the Patriot Act taking away their personal freedoms."
The reverse is also true: people who DON'T want smoking bans are perfectly ok with the government tampering with their civil liberties.
Go figure.......

End the subsidies and let the market determine the actual cost for a pack of cigarettes. I think a lot of people would quit smoking, and many people would never start.
Tobacco Subsidies in United States totaled $530 million from 1995-2005.

I don't believe in smoking bans. If a business owner wants to operate a smoking establishment, he should be able to do so. For the record, I am a former smoker.

I'm a non smoker and I am glad to see it banned. While smoking is legal, the country is now more non-smoking than smoking. In Ohio, they ask you to step outside, enjoy your smoke, and come back in.
I don't like the fact that the owner of a business cannot decide for themselves and advertise themselves as a smoking bar or non-smoking bar, but the non-smokers spoke and it is now law.
I benefit from it being smoke free and I am being selfish on this one.
