Protestants do you have the pope as their head and they have historically differed over historical Catholic practices like the selling of indulgences, the maintenance of the wealth of the Catholic church central authorities and the centralisation of power in Rome.

Well, I'm no expert but I would say the protestants protested the right of the catholic church to dictate every facet of their life and beliefs and control how they expressed their faith in worship. Protestants wanted to have more direct contact with god without the need for intercessors. they also protested the right of the catholic church to interpret the bible for them. They have minor differences between some protestant churches and more with other denominations. Also the catholics claim direct apostlic rights handed down from the original apostles. The church of England and others like the Episcopalians do to, though this is disputed by the catholics.

Catholics have saints and sacraments, Protestants don't.
Roman Catholics have a centralized leader--the pope--while other catholics and Protestants do not have a centralized government (in general).
There are actually groups of Christian leaders who meet and try to bridge the gaps between sects, but the Church will probably never be fully reunited.

Catholic leaders have added a lot of stuff to the Bible and the Protestants believe that the Bible should be followed the way it is, without adding or taking anything away. The Pope is too powerful to change and it makes no sense to try and make Protestants do things against the Bible. So, it looks like there will always be a conflict.
God Bless!

Catholocism as a religion wants to join with all other religions. There are many Protestant denominations now that feel the same way. This is Mystery Babylon and we are commanded to come out of her.
Revelation 18:1 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

When you change the teaching of salvation from what Jesus taught you leave the realm of "follower of Jesus" and become a man made religion.
Jesus taught that " I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.".
Catholics teach that Mary can forgive sins, as well as priests and of course the church because of grace left by Christ when he left earth. Not to mention the Pope who is unquestioned in word and deed.
I know a lot of Catholics who are Christians and don't follow these teachings. But, the Catholic teachings contradict the teachings of Christ on salvation and have become an offshoot manmade cult.

Protestants believe the words of Jesus when He said, I am the way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father (God) except through me. John 14:6
Catholics believe that Mary, the mother of Jesus can act as a go between them and God and recommend their cases which has no biblical basis.

Catholics have alot of man made traditions that are not biblical. Protestants do not believe, or practice, these traditions. No, it's not possible to merge the two.
