Yes, caffeine is a stimulant, and therefore does affect the heart, and can cause problems for people suffering from heart disease. Also, if you are overweight, diabetic, or have high blood pressure, you should stay away from cola.

I'm not sure about the chemical reactions that take place, but I would say yes. The sugar plus caffeine content of a soda might stress the heart more than normally. Caffeine is a narcotic, addictive, in otherwords, plus it is a stimulant, making your hear rate speed up, nervous system speed up, etc. I would recommend for someone with heart disease to lay off of the soda.

The caffeine in most cola can speed up heart rate, I think, and it might also increase blood pressure. You'd better avoid it.
