You cannot purchase any within the US. However it is very easy to order from Czech Republic and most companies have a seize clause when they ship, so if it gets seized they ship you a new bottle. The company I like the best is La Boheme. Search google for La Boheme Absinthe. Best of luck.

You cannot buy this liqour in this country, BUT i happen to have a recipe and it is not illegal to make your own. *note* some of the ingredients are hard to find unless you know where to look. try ebay for some of the herbs. this way look like alot of work, but it is very worth it!

30.0 g wormwood
8.5 g hyssop
1.8 g calamis
6.0 g melissa
30.0 g anise seed
25.0 g fennel seed
10.0 g star anise
3.2 g coriander seed

Put the dry herbs in a large jar. Dampen slightly. Add 800 ml of 85-95 percent ethyl-alcohol (use alcohol suitable for drinking). Wine spirits make a better product than pure grain alcohol. Let it steep for several days - a week is better - shaking occasionally. Then add 600 ml of water and let the whole macerate for another day. Decant off the liquid squeezing as much from the mass of herb as possible. Wet the herbs with some vodka and squeeze again. Recipe should give a little over a liter and a half of green liquor. It must then be distilled. Inferior recipes skip this step, but what they produce is not worthy to be called absinthe.

In the distillation, change the receiver when the distillate turns yellow: those ar the faints. You can save the faints and add them to future distillations, but they will taint the flavor if added directly to the product. Just use the good stuff. The next step is to color and finish the liqueur by another round of maceration.

Color the distillate by again adding:

4.2 g mint
1.1 g melissa
3.0 g wormwood
1.0 g citron peel
4.2 g liquorice root

Let the herbs macerate for another three or four days. Decant, filter, bottle. You will probably want to carefully add some concentrated sugar syrup to the blend. The result will be a Swiss style absinthe of about 135 proof.Recipe makes one liter of absinthe.

You can not purchase in the US. Some of what E1 is saying is correct- It is illegal to produce, manufacture, or sell absinth in the US. It is NOT illegal to posses or consume. You must order on-line or drive to Canada. I recommend on-line. Make sure what you purchase specifically mentions thujone. There's a lot of "fake" absinth out there and it is nothing more than a fancy moonshine. It will not be cheap, but I feel it is well worth every penny. You should expect to pay some where in the $200 USD range for a bottle of the good stuff. I prefer King of Spirits Gold or Zele. Try this site:

Enjoy

The absinthe you are looking for is illegal in the United States, and many other countries for that matter. You can probably find absinthe at a specialty liquor store, but it's not going to be the kind to make you see the "green fairy". Generally, this absinthe comes from the Czech Republic. I've had French absinthe and Czech absinthe and the Czech stuff blew me away. Of course, this was smuggled into Canada from Prague.

Absinthe is not and never was hallucinogenic, that's a myth.

It is illegal to sell in the US based on FDA regulation but not illegal to own. It can't be made by soaking herbs in vodka and home distilling is illegal. It can be imported but can be seized by customs. Keep in mind most czech absinth is not real absinthe and there are plenty of overpriced bogus brands out there trying to take your money.

I tried a bit of the French stuff at a tasting party a while ago. Once was enough.

Please do a little reading. Thujone, the ingredient from wormwood which you are speaking of does not, nor has it ever, caused hallucinations. Read the wiki entry for absinthe.
