The only situation where you could is if you're supporting a parent and can claim them as a dependent, and you pay more than half the cost of keeping up a home that is the main home for the entire year for that parent - this can include the situation where you pay more than half the cost of keeping them in a facility for the elderly. A parent is the only dependent who doesn't have to live with you to qualify you to file as head of household.

If you are single and living alone and have no dependents, then you can never file as Head of Household.

But if you maintain a home for a parent who does not live with you, then you can file as Head of Household. You do not have to own the home, you have to pay more than half the costs of rent or mortgage, food, utilities, repairs.

Head of Household gives a tax break of about $200 or $300 for people in the 10% or 15% brackets who owe taxes.
