If you don't mind a bigger dog and when you go searching, make sure it will relax while you pet it. That's one way to tell a dog is right for you. Unless you like spastic dogs. They are really good companions and fully love you for you, nothing more. They become like family and let me warn you, it hurts when they pass or get lost so, just know that. The only way to find out if a dog is right for you, is if you look and interact with it first. There really isn't a criteria for finding one. You know, there are a lot of dogs that the shelter, needing adoption and some are golden retrievers or a mixed breed with golden retriever. Hope you find one you'll love as much as I love my dog.

Make sure you have the space for the size of dog you want to get. you need to decide if you are going to want inside dogs or outside dogs. large bread dogs live shorter lives than smaller dogs so if you want one that is going to be around for say 15 years or more get a small dog. If you want easy to take care of dogs get a short haired one not a long haired dog ( will save you on grooming too). Try to start with a puppy so you can raise it to be a nice kind dog. gl finding your best friend

Check out the Dog channel. com or take the quiz from the Animal Planet to help choose the dog breed for you.

Get a mix. From what I understand, their temperments are almost allways better, though my experience with PBs gois about as far as 12hours with my latest addition to the family, a 9week old papillon. My other dog, who we've had for years, is a mutt and he's just awesome.

I'm biased towards terriers. All the ones I've owned had massive personality (totally silly, cheeky, bit mischievous) and were very very good watch dogs. Miniature schnauzers are my favourite and I thoroughly recommend them.

Use this breed selector
http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselectorindex.do
than look at these reviews
http://www.yourpurebredpuppy.com/dogbreeds/index.html
Then once you have a couple of breeds in mind go to their breed club site
for ex
http://www.grca.org/
The club sites usually have really good info on selecting pups and what to watch out for in a breeder and usually have breeder referals
