Landfills may have leaks, so chemicals leach down into the soil along with percolating rainwater. The resulting pollution may get into the groundwater or work its way into surface water.

If the soil used to cover layers of compacted trash is contaminated, it will be a problem when the weather is dry and windy. The contaminated soil may blow away from the landfill area.

Landfills always have the capacity to attract rodents, gulls, and other scavengers that may carry disease or spread bacteria and fungi.

Landfills prduce methane gas from anaerobic decomposition. Some operations collect the methane gas for sale as fuel and some burn the methane gas off in a flare-like perpetual flame. Still, there's always a danger that the methane could cause a dangerous explosion or fire.

Since landfills require the use of large trucks and other heavy equipment, there's a potential for personal injury.
