I usually right a journal entry or a story, by doing that I am able to write myself to sleep by getting out the excess thoughts, sometimes I keep a journal by my beside and anytime a troubling thought comes to mind I reach over and it the blindness of the dark--write.
I reccomend it.

Why don't you try exercise? Lots of it. If you're awake at 5am, get up. Don't lie around in bed. Get out, do some vigorous exercise. It'll tire you so that you sleep better the next night, and it may also improve your chemistry and improve the depression. If you join a gym or a running group or a sports club or whatever, you'll meet people to talk to. Good luck! Hope this helps.

yeah.... I do experience the same problem too. I don't know bout you...but, I thought I can't sleep due to depression. I don't feel like under any pressure but after I've been thinking on how to solve my sleeping problem, I realized that I do feel depressed.. I can't sleep at night..and the worst thing was that i have class the next day....I can't sleep and feeling tired all day long. I even cried a few times cause i was feeling real empty inside.. It's like i was dying... Nothing there for me to stay alive. Then, i decided to share my problems with others, my mom especially.
I told her every single thing that bothers me....my feeling, education, bout the school, and even bout friends...
She reminds me to just let all the problems to god....Don't take things too seriously, cause it will bothers you..Causing you to have insomnia(sleeping problem) and feeling depressed.
I suggest you to ponder upon your life, from every angle. Find the problem that annoys you or troubles you...face the problem rather than avoid it because the faster you deal with the problem, the 'better' you can sleep. And don't forget to share it wih others... cause sharing really helps.

Our family has always said that it happens that way because it is quiet time where you can pray and focus on spiritual things. Listen to beautiful music but not sad music as it will make you more sad. Have you considered getting tested for sleep apnea? Also meds for depression are great. Work hard and vigorously during the day and don't take naps and avoid caffeine. That's it for now. Mmm

Try this technique: it's called abdominal breathing. It's relaxing and also good for long-term health. It's simple to do:
Lie on your bed facing upwards. Take a slow deep breath. As you breath in slowly, expand your tummy outwards until it cannot expand any more. As you breath out slowly, relax your tummy until it flattens out. Keep your mind focused on your breathing as you breathe. Every breathing in and out makes one count. Try doing 30 counts of deep breathing. Most people fall asleep before reaching 20 counts. Others find it easier to fall asleep after that.

You could try playing a hand held video game---like poker or Yahtzee. The repetition will make you sleepy and you'll just nod off..... This has worked for me before.
