We have nightmares because we are trying to work out some emotional issue in our waking life. Each dream offers a solution or a new perspective on a problem or troublesome relationship. The nightmare gets our attention. We're likely to have a recurrent nightmare when we don't address the issue and make a change. Nightmares stop when we understand what we need to do AND make that change.
Watching a scary movie might contribute to the content of a nightmare or the specific imagery, but that's not why you had it. If something in a movie turns up in your dream, it means it SPOKE to your feelings and concerns in a personal way and you used it to continue working on the problem.
The symbols in your dream are your own, often used idiosyncratically, and not something you can look up in dream dictionary.
Whatever has been troubling you, possibly more than one thing, is likely the source of your nightmare. Make the change and the nightmares will stop.

Details about the dream would help immensely-
lay off the scary stuff right before bed, no odd snacks that have vinegar or are especially sour. If you drink, take a nip of a liquor to settle you down, I notice I remember dreams less with a nightcap. If it's recurring about a certain person, go talk to that person and tell them as much as you can about the dream see if they can shed some light. maybe they can allay those fears that are causing nightmares. Consider what your dream is about and what is happening you can glean some clues from the dream.

Examine the elements of the dream, trying to ignore it will not help. Why is it so disturbing to you? Does it reflect any fears which you usually keep buried and try not to think about?
As a side note, lucid dreaming is great - I don't know how I learned the trick, but whenever a dream begins to become a nightmare, I can control it. I am aware that it is a dream, and that it is MINE.

psychic? it could be foreshadowing events to come. I know someone that kept having a dream that her dog was hit by a car, just on dusk, for months. it freaked her out so much that she always made sure the dog was locked up every night. Nothing happened from it unitl she was running late one night and hadn't locked the dog in. sure enough the dog was killed. This actually happened. but saying that most nightmares are only about your subconscious feeling stressed and they don't always mean anything will happen

When you are awake, think through the nightmare completely, but change the bad parts. Think what you'd like it to be about instead. Do this a few times each day and it will rewire your brain to change the outcome of the dream.

sometimes its stress related... try stay in the fresh air more... watch funny movies... hang out with the people u like.. u know, just the good stuff...if u have a really good day and think little of that one problem (or more) that's bothering u... u probably wont have that nightmare for a few nites... practice happy living (even tho that may seem tough with the potential trouble you are having in life)... just try... and tomorrow will be a better day... ^_^

It would help to know the details. I use to have one about an elephant charging me and I would run and fly and do everything to get away and always end up at school where I could be safe. My foster Mom told me that it was because I was running away from responsibility and it was related to me not doing my homework and that is why I ended up at school. Never had the dream again after she told me that. Funny huh.

Uhgh I hate those. Usually I will write a journal about the dream, and everynight the dream develops I write more of a journal,. till the journal becomes a story and I write an ending.
Also I recommend finding out what your dream means. Um email me and I might no how to figure it out for you.
