Lots of possibilities, so research it on the 'net, looking for correlations with other symptoms/difficulties you tend to experience.
After years of trying different things, I found that the two most important factors for me are two that are hardly talked about. One is synthetic chemicals. It's a well-proven fact, I don't sleep much on sheets that have been washed in highly perfumed detergents or coated with fabric softeners in the dryer. My habitual insomnia disappeared when I switched to 'safer' health store brands.
It also comes back when I try to sleep at my parents' house on visits, but only when I'm in the same room as a closet full of my mother's clothes. Maybe there are similar environmental factors in your sleeping space.
The other is magnesium. Supplementing magnesium helps with my sleeping. Sometimes herbs work, but the most reliable one for me is Salus/Flora's liquid magnesium.
That's just my experience, it may or may not pertain to you. It took me years to figure these out -- and they are biologically reasonable with good science behind them -- so I'd just like to make sure you're aware of them. Good luck with getting it sorted.

if you have alot on your mind you may want to start journalling, not necessarily at bedtime, just to get your thoughts " out of your head and onto paper' some people pray before bed, giving their worries and concerns to God. that helps too.
I am bad, I like to go to bed with a full stomach...:D I hate to go to bed hungry. but that is greedy ole me...
some people drink warm milk, I have never tried it, but a cup of hot chocolate sounds good! Make it with milk instead of water...
another thing that has helped me is to WORK HARD, physically do a lot of hard work, get worn out! If you don't have enough to do at your house, come to mine...lol or Volunteer in your community, help a neighbor, burn that energy.
I also use tylenol and benedryl (generic) they are the main ingredients in otc sleep aids.
Hope this helps...
Sweet Dreams.

You may have Insomnia, but it could just be a result from daily stress, depending on how much you're cramming into your life.
But then again you may have nothing and you're just making youself worry. Don't talk youself into having something you don't...
