There are many good study Bibles out there, however, my preference is the New International Version (NIV). I was very, very simple for me as a new believer.

I would say the New American Bible is a good choice. You won't miss out on anything. If there are any problems, its only becuase it may have too many books, but it won't be missing any. It's the Catholic version approved by bishops for American English speakers.
Some protestant Bibles are smaller than the Catholic version, and I think it would be better to have maybe a bit extra to study than to miss out on something.
New Bibles that claim to be easier to understand and more relevant to modern times usually sacrifice some of the language and sometimes even meaning that make the Bible what it is. I would stay away from them.
Each Bible is pretty much the same, except in some instances where there are different numbers of books. For someone who has never read a Bible though, any Bible should do until they start delving deeper into study.
Edit:
The New American also has notes as you read that can help you better understand what the Bible is saying and help you see connections to other parts of the Bible and symbols. Often, this version includes a brief summary of Christian Dogma and Doctrine, plus the occasional section on the structure of the Church. This may come to use for other things.

The Quest Study bible in NIV. It has questions and answers about the text you are reading in the margins. The NIV translation is modern English, much easier to understand than the King James. As you are reading along, a question may pop into your mind about whatever you are reading at the moment. Somehow the authors knew what these were, and address these questions. I really like this translation, and have been using it in my bible study for ten years.
