It has been 22 years since I got away from grass and 28 years since I grew any, but i remember the differences well.

Marijuana basicly refers to the leaf/stem mixture you get from the whole plant. Bud refers to the specific part of the plant that holds the seads. The buds will be greasy feeling because they are rich in the oils you care about.

The downside of bud is that if the plant has been grown wild, there will be an abundance of seeds and they will explode like popcorn. Carefull homegrowers will remove the plants that produce pollen (male plants). Then the ones producing buds will be seedless.

I am not aware of any states that make bud legal over the rest of the plant. If you think about it, it does not make any sense to make the more potent part of the plant legal.

While I feel that the current laws are a 21st century version of prohibition and they make matters worse, I can tell you from experience that you are better off to avoid getting stoned. I toked for 15 years and quit just before having my kid.

You'll need to check state laws, they vary. Bud is usually not legal either-

Marijuana is usually the whole plant, or at least the name of the plant. Buds are the flowering part of the plant that is the most potent part of the plant, and the part that is usually harvested for smoking. Yes, the bud does have more THC (that's why they harvest that part).

The only legal bud I have ever heard of is Budweiser. Bud is a slang term for marijuana. They are the same thing.
