I have a 14 month old labrador and I will be working out of the country for 3 years. Would he still remember me when I get back home?

That depends on a lot of different factors; primarily, your relationship with your dog and the dog's personality. If you were closely involved with the dog when he was a puppy- especially during primary socialization and training- then he will probably have a close attachment to you and will remember you. Also, if his personality is to be a dedicated companion, it is more likely that he will remember you during your absence.

It can also depend on his environment while you're gone. It's usually easier for a dog to stay in the same house, with lots of familiar faces, than to live in a different home with people he doesn't know well. One thing you can do to help your buddy remember you is to leave him with something that has your scent on it. You can sleep on a pillowcase or with a washcloth next to your body for a week or so before you leave, and then leave the item for your dog to sleep with in his crate when you leave. Also, don't forget that he can probably recognize your voice, or at least the tone of voice you typically use with him, over the phone!

Hope that helps. I know how hard it is to leave your best friend behind when work takes you away from home!

You must love him if you would ask this question. I am so sorry you have to leave him for a bit. He will remember you I am sure.

My mother had moved out of state, after 5 years she brought the dog back with her to visit my sons and I.
Baby (The Rot) Had not seen my son since he was 2 years old and she ran to him and wouldnt leave his side for over a hour. They loved eachother and played often before they left out of state. My son had kissed her on the nose the day she left and when she came back my son got a huge kiss on his nose.
Good luck on you job and maybe give your puppy a call so he can hear your voice once in a while.

Dogs have a strong memory and whenever dogs sees you almost everyday he'll know you for 5-8 years of separation. So definitely he will remember you. :-D

Possibly- depends on the relationship you have right now. Also what happens to the dog during the time can effect this.

I'm pretty sure he'll remember you, but your relationship won't be the same.
