... fill the details with mindless blather about the verity of their own beliefs, and razz those of other people? Then, they only pick the answer that agrees with them as "best answer", instead of the most articulate and best argued one?

I would say you're wrong so you don't vote my answer as being the best.
Now, seriously about it: Have you ever heard the term "agent provocateur"? This is just an application of it.
More often than not, People looking for public recognition of their works, opinions or beliefs, stir things up and try to manipulate the audience until they find someone who gets their message and agrees with them, so they pick his anwer as the best, which in his head is a victory (i.e: -"See? I knew I was right from the beginning!"-). This is actually a sympton of some inferiority complex, as they continuously look for recognition, acceptance, things like that. Many of us who try to answer as much questions as we can are on the same league, too!

As Confucius said... well, he said a lot of things.

Now go and post a better answer, people!

It's a tough issue. The only answer I can think of is that this isn't an intelligent place. I've tried to ask some questions on here that would require more thoughtful answers, and it generally fails. My policy is that I try to pick an opposing viewpoint as my best answer, but I rarely get to do so because the answers don't merit it. So either people are just opinionated and insecure and want to hear their beliefs reinforced, or they are jaded from insightful questions shot down by the dumb masses.

Sounds like one of your better answers didn't make it as a "Best"! Actually, you do have a good point there. If somebody is ignorant enough to have to ask the question (ignorant, not stupid), then what qualifies them to judge the answers? What qualifies them to know if ANY of the answers are correct? And if they already know the correct answer, why the heck are they asking? The only logical answer is that they pick the one they like best, regardless of whether it's correct. That's why I answer dumb or silly questions with dumb and silly answers! The more blather in the question, the more I'll play with them. If the question's sincere and to the point, I try to answer in kind.

These things happen because people simply want to be heard.

There is nothing wrong with that by itself. Unfortunately, not everyone (if not most) don't know how to properly do this.

Moreover and quite sadly, not everyone knows how to also listen and emphatize.

Sure, it's a natural tendency to be protective of your beliefs/knowledge, but I think there is insufficient "training" by any institution (family, school, government, etc) on how to keep an open mind. Therefore, a lot of people stick with the instinctive tendency to be protective.

Because the blissful cage of ignorance is best used when no one outside it can argue against your views. The people who do that seem to be looking more for validation than an actual chink in their argument. Besides, most of those people have a hard time understanding how anyone could be against their so cleverly worded statements!

Some people don't ask questions in order to hear different views or get something to think about. They just want to state their own opinion and hear how many agree (like that makes them somehow more correct). They don't care about other opinions, they close their ears to them and only listen to what they want to hear. It also seems like they think that when others read their opinions they will suddenly start agreeing with them and convert or something.

Generally I feel they are trying to promote bigotry.
They such you in with something that initially looks like it's worth the time, then get you so pissed off you answer anyway.

Because they are liars.

I no of no other word to describe someone who misleads others into believing something that is not so. Such people create the impression that they have a question, when in fact they just want to rant and recieve agreement. They are pathetic.

Perhaps they are not as intelligent as their questions make them out to be.
