hey, well you should start by simply building the mileage you run. running out of breath could be taken two ways its natural that you breathe harder when running. Try going in your nose out your mouth. However if you mean you can't breathe at all that means your probably trying to go faster than you can. Try slowing down and going farther. Then when you can run about 4 miles without stopping, try timing your 2 mile again. Also try checking your form, and doing some speed work if that doesn't cut it.

Sounds like you're joining the military! If you're in decent shape, you should easily be able to keep a relatively comfortable jog and make 18 minutes. My best time in the Army was 13 minutes 5 seconds, but believe me - that ISN'T fast! There were guys that were doing it in 10.
