I wouldn't eat immediately before a workout because your body needs time to digest the food. However, eating nutrient-rich complex carbohydrates about an hour before working out will do well to fuel your body. Legumes (lentils, beans) have been shown to be an excellent form of energy for working out because they are a slow-burning fuel that will last you throughout the day. I'd eat some lentils with brown rice or some other whole grain.

After you work out, protein is good because that's when your muscles have got the message to make new muscle cells.
