why do "askers" often choose the most "sensible" answers, when actually what they want to hear is what suits them the most??

I know.
Recently saw a question,"should I leave my teenage son to fend for himself while I follow a man - not the boys father - who has left me."
About 30 people replied and said "NOOOO - dont do it - your son needs you etc etc. The man is obviously no good etc. etc" She chose the 1 person that said basically "if it feels good do it".
She wanted to go - just wanted it confirmed. To soothe her conscience?
Why do we see the same question on here over and over? I went to ask the other day "what are capers?" and when I typed it in I saw that 3 other people had asked the same question - so I DIDNT ASK IT. I just read the answers to their question.
This has happened a few times, but then I see the same question OVER AND OVER. How many times do you see "could I be pregnant?" I always want to write IF youve had sex then yes you could be - why ask us? Go to a doctor for crying out loud!!!
And all the Saddam related questions - How do we feel about it? - enough already!

Sometimes people get new ideas from the answers, and then they choose them.
I think I do see some best answers that were preferable to the asker, but not really the right answer.

Maybe they feel it's only fair to choose the most sensible answer as the person who wrote it actucally took time to think about it and gathered his/her thoughts to try to help the asker as much as he/she could.

I'd say usually because they just want another person to validate what they were thinking themselves. I think this is especially true when it comes to etiquette questions. They want someone to tell them it's OK to ask for money for their wedding, or that it's OK to not send a thank you note when they receive a gift. When in their heart they know it's not the right thing to do. Good question.
