How does the whole process work to reinstall windows etc. and deleting the old version that is already infested by virusses?

Don go for reinstalling windows and all. A good Anti-virus software would do.Try McAfee.

There's usually no need to reload Windows to get rid of a virus(es). Just download a good anti-virus software, such as AVG Free, (link shown below), and run that program in Safe Mode.

If you find yourself with a stubborn virus that seems to be too difficult to fully remove try downloading this program called HijackThis http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php#hijackthis and then once you've ran it (you want to just do a scan and save a log file) you can post it at one of these sites for analysis.http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/forums.php
It's often easier and better than reinstalling Windows altogether if you can avoid it.

Well you can format that drive using a regular Windows Xp disk and do a clean install.
