Not always done at birth. Recently captured slaves were also castrated as well.
Eunichs are castrated to prevent rape, this castration (removal of penis and testicals) Results in the man plumping up and getting fat (Retaining Water, perhaps)
Made great body guards for Princesses, but crappy application and first day I'd imagine.

I believe that such people are called "eunic" though I'm not completely sure of the spelling of this word.
If you have a copy of the book "Candide" by Voltaire you may wish to look for this word in the begining of this work. One of the main characters has this condition.
