How many different types of antidepressant medicines do most people take before they find one that works? I have tried 6-7 and none of them have worked. Does that mean I have a more serious problem? The Dr said to talk to a Psychiatrist. I did. He told me to quit my job and he wasnt going to give me any different kind of medicine. I have been depressed since I was 15. I am 45 now. Thanks for your replies.

I would go to another Dr. and tell them what this Dr. has said. There is something out there that will help you. You might need to take something along with an antidepressant. I take Effexor XL, but it doesn't work for me all the time. Good luck.

Usually there are many types of anti-depressent pills and the range is wide .
Being depressed for sucha long period is definitely not a good thing but that's not what all that matters usually a person is depressed for about 5 years before he finds out and that's normal and has almost no after effects after treatment .

The best way to cope with depression is to be on constant change without considering the consequences too much. That is a real help but in your case if you do that the effects may not be visible to you before atleast a year .

Try changing the way you percieve things , let go off the behaiour you follow and do things you usually refrain from and if you do that I am sure you will get well.

Good Luck.

I have had about five different types of antidepressants and they all worked on me although in different ways. Maybe you are not giving the medication a chance to work. They could take from two weeks up to a month to begin to make a difference. Keep seeing the psychiatrist on a regular basis, and take his advice. I think of the medication as a temporary relief until the cause is sorted out and rectified. Counsellors, Psychiatrists, self help courses, books, Church and God have all helped me in my journey to happiness. Good luck.

Medicine can only do just so much. It's up to you to get counseling to get past what is making you so depressed.

I suffer with depression too. I have been on many different types of medication. In fact, my doctor is still adjusting it. You need to find a doctor who has patience and experience. Don't give up on yourself either. Another thing that will help you is if you consider accepting Jesus into your heart. Pray to God, he listens and it does make you feel better to know that He loves you. Take some time every day to read the bible. If you don't have one, you can read from one online. Do a daily devotional, you can also get these online. God will help bring hope into your life and maybe bring a doctor into your life that can seriously help you with the medicinal part.

God bless and best wishes!

I took several anti depressants and they did not help me. Sometimes people are lucky and the first they take helps, others take all of them and still say that they are not helped. Sounds like you need to change doctors first then make a plan. Make sure that you give the pills time to work, some take up to 2 months to make a positive difference. One made me very ill within minutes of taking it but if you can tolerate minor side effects, keep trying. If they don't work, try alternative meds but get advice as some interact with meds from your doctor. Is your job making you ill? Seems strange you were told to quit it.... Perhaps you need to look at making some changes to your life to help you get better?

After more than ten years of tinkering, my cocktail of three different meds seem to be doing the trick.
See a different Psychiatrist. I've been through a couple. Only you know when you start to feel "right". If the dr. is no help, he's worthless!
Also, weight changes will change how your meds work.

I would see another Dr. I have been on several types of meds. I still have depression. I just think it is the world we live in. You may need a higher dose of your meds or possibly another with what you have. Good Luck. I also am 45 and have been fighting it for years.

Have you tried a combination of Prozac and Wellbutrin? Works good for me. So does medical marijuana. You can get it for depression if you live in California. Oh and by the way, you should find another doctor. Any doctor who is not going to help you with your medications and won't listen to what you know your body needs, to me, is a quack.

you may need a combination of two antideppresants but you also need a good doc. my doc took me out of work and i've been approved for diability so i can focus on getting better without anything distracting. i've been depressed since as long as i can remember. i take 40mg of prozac for awhile then after about 6months i'll change to effexor XL for awhile. it works for me but you have to experiment till you find what works. good luck.

The best I've found that works for me is Senaquan (Doxepin). I don't know I'm on it, but I sleep better and feel much better.
