If the Wisdom teeth is the 3rd molar, and my 2nd molars are so bad that I would need a root canal, wouldn't it be better to remove the 2nd molars? Or is there something else I'm missing about Wisdom teeth?

If you are less than 15 years old and the wizzys are still under the gum, then this may be an option. Anything older than this an the wizzys will not automatically come up at the best angle, nor will they move forward. So normally the wizzys are removed rather than the 2nd molars to keep a good bite.
However, if the 2nd molars have been damaged due to the wizzys impacting into the back of them, then it may not be worth trying to save the 2nd molars. Typically in such cases the decay in the 2nd molars is deep at the back, and even with an RCT and crown, the longevity is questionable.
So, it is worth considering removing badly damaged 2nd molars, and then later having the wizzys straightened and moved forward with braces. But talk to an orthodontist before doing anything - the size and shape of wizzy roots are not usually as good as 2nd molars.
Real-life example - my wife lost lower 1st molars at an early age, had poor dental treatment on 2nd molars resulting in extractions at age of 20, then had wizzys pulled forward to within 3mm of her 2nd premolars. Not perfect, but darn good in the time before implants - still good after 20 years. Considering the cost of implants anyway, it was quite cost effective.

wisdom teeth are nonfunctional...basically just there in your mouth.....If you extracted your 2molars you would just have a space there and wouldnt be able to eat proper due to the teeth missing. Unless you speak to an orthodontist and see what they could do for you but im not sure how that works. Get the root canal done on your 2nd molar and restore that tooth.good luck!

my hubby-to-be got this exact thing done because his wisdom teeth and his molars were fighting for the same small space with unbelievable pain.he was told to wait for the antibiotics he was on to 'kick-'in'. he honestly didn't sleep for 2 whole days. he went to the dentist on the 3rd day after about 60 hours of this tremendous pain and they pulled them out... he was that exhausted he fell asleep on the dentist's chair! you don't particularily need wisdom teeth(whoever named them wisdom teeth obviously didn't have a brain!) .root canals themselves can be extremely painful. you may eventually have to remove the molars if they are as bad as they sound! then you'd have a huge gap where both your molars and wisdom teeth had been removed! i'd go for the molars to be removed! good luck mate!!
