The Ford 6.0L diesel puts out 325 horsepower and 570 ft/lbs. of torque.

The Dodge 6.7L diesel puts out 305 horsepower and 610 ft/lbs. of torque.

So the Ford puts out more peak horsepower, probably due to the fact that it is an 8-cylinder engine with smaller pistons and a shorter stroke, while the 6-cylinder Dodge produces more torque because of the larger pistons and longer stroke.

Ford diesels are normally produced for them by International Harvester (Navstar) which has been making great trucks and engines for many years. The Dodge engines are produced by Cummins which is a preferred engine company for over the road professional truckers. The engine used in the Dodge is essentially the same one used in a lot of heavy equipment like backhoes and loaders.

In terms of diesel power in a truck, the horsepower figure is less important than the torque figure. Torque is what you will most need for towing heavy loads - so it really depends on what you plan on doing with the truck.

If you're going to drive it around with a light or no load most of the time, the Ford may be better for you as it will respond more like a gas engine. However if you are planning on pulling a trailer or carrying heavy loads, then the tried and true Cummins is probably your best bet in the Dodge. The Dodge also has an advantage in being an in-line 6, with fewer parts and easier serviceability. The Cummins diesel has a reputation for long life and reliability.

Both the Cummings and International diesel are proven engines. with the right gear combination both can be stump pullers. The question of automatic transmission is a totally different matter. Ford has mated a reliable transmission to their diesel, while Dodge has yet to offer a reliable automatic transmission which can handle the torque of the Cummings diesel.
