An aquaintence of mine was bitten by a dog, not one of those so-called vicious breeds, who had been very gentle to everyone else. All he did was to reach over in passing to pet the dog and the dog bit him hard. The dog never before or since bit anyone. This man owns cats and I don't think he was sincere in wanting to pet the dog. I don't think he really likes dogs. Do you think the dog had a sense that this man was the "enemy"?

In my experience dogs know more about how you are feeling then even you do. Dogs can sense things that we can't. As for affection and dislike, a definite yes dogs can sense if a person likes or dislikes them almost from the moment they set foot in your house.

In the particular case that you've brought to the table here---who really knows ?? The situation could have been any number of things that brought this incidence on---entirely too many variables to be able to say with any surity at all !!

But, that being said
You dang straight dogs can sense these things in people
some have attributed this to a collective sensory combination of a strong read of body language AND the fact that dogs have a sense of smell that outstrips the human by some 200 times !!
They CAN and DO actually smell Fear or other emotions in people by the ferrimones that they produce in the various emotional states that they are in----And a great deal of dogs' reaction to the world around it is driven by the sense of smell !!

Well first of all you are never soppose to just reach out and pet a dog. You are soppose to let them sniff you first, one way by putting your hand down to let them sniff. Also you should never look a strange dog in the eyes, this relays the message that you are ready to fight or confront them. If they are already wary of you this could be dangerous for you. And yes I believe dogs can sense just about anything from pple. Fear, emotion, sadness, happy. You can see this when you have a dog...they know how to read your actions and sutle movements.

I think animals can sense trouble when they see it coming and have a whole range of emotions. Since they can't speak, they express themselves like animals do. Your friend did something that made the animal fear for himself, so he protected himself. It isn't wise to pat the head of every dog you see. You don't know what has happened to this dog in the past or how he is interpreting your actions so best keep your hands to yourself.

I believe any animal can sense fear, affection and dislike.

Was the dog facing the him when he tried to pet him? If not, he might have startled the dog.

definitely, dogs can sense everything

just this past Sat I was at a friend's house and whenever I calmed my heart down their dog would approach me happily, but never when I was afraid

also, this one girl told me that her mother was once talking to herself when she was in the kitchen alone with their dog. She said, "I hate this dog!" The dog left the kitchen so angrily she honestly thought he understood her!

Dogs can definitely sense these things and come on, if this man owned cats, that more reason for the dog to be upset!

Yes dogs have good sense of who is good and bad. They will tell you if your friends are true or not. Thats another reason why they are called man's best friend. The can also sense when you are in pain and need help and they will be there when you are sad.

Yes, a dog does sense fear, affection, dislike, etc.
Remember they have a sixth sense that we do not possess.
If you show any fear, they will sense it and even if they aren't a mean natured dog, when they sense your fear, it involks in them a particular distaste.
