My dog has been licking his rectum for a few days now. It is swollen. I relieved his anal glands tonight..thinking that, that may be the reason why he is licking and it is swollen. After I emptied, the swelling went down for a bit..now it is swollen again and he is back to licking. .....the licking isnt constant...just every now and then i catch him....what could this be?

Apply an antibiotic ointment to the area and put a cone on him if you have one at home.

Has he been dewormed lately? Is he having hard stools or diarrhea? Those can be contributing factors and a vet can help you out with those issues.

It could be an infection or constipation. Make sure he is pooping and (i know its gross) inspect it to make sure it isnt too dry and the dog is not dehydrated. If he is constipated or it doesnt go away soon get him to a vet, both can cause bad intestinal problems and complications. If it is his glands he may have a swollen gland or have a blocked duct or something. Keep an eye on him and get him to a vet.

You really should take him to the vet.
It sounds like it could be more then the anal glands.

Lol, I'm with you Cynthia. Who gave you 3 bad ratings for that answer? Honest to God, she's right. Dude, take your dog to a vet ASAP.

I agree with the previous answer, and would add that your dog's licking probably irritates the site. VET.

There could be an abcess. You may have to have him checked by your vet.

My God, leave your poor dog's anus alone! What does "relieved his anal glands..." mean? Take him to the vet! It could be hemorroids, cancer, etc!
