When not actually asleep, dogs are really perky and energetic. His eyes should be clear, his breathing even and his tail held up.
If he is moping around, sort of dragging his heels when he walks, kind of stiff legged, and his head hung down he is probably sick. His nose should be wet, and cool to the touch. That part is true. If he looks and acts sick he probably is.
Another thing about dogs is they have this instinct to eat even if they are full. Wild dogs don't get to eat every day usually. So when they get food, they pig out.
So if he isn't interested in his food, or his water, he is probably sick.
Another thing is that dogs get a lot of different respiratory infections than humans, and some of them, like parvo, are really bad, but the dog would look like he has a human style cold.
How old is he and how long has he been sick?
If only for a few hours wait for morning to take him to see the vet, and that if he has gotten worse or stays the same.
If you take his temperature, and you would have to do it rectally and very carefully, his normal temperature should be 101 degrees fahrenheit.
Hope he gets to feeling better.
And make sure he drinks plenty of water, dogs do that normally but when they are sick it is even more important.

****"Normally, dogs will manifest symptoms of respiratory tract allergies like sneezing, wheezing, and coughing. Their nose and their eyes may also manifest a discharge just like humans do whenever they have colds or flu."
****"Dog coughs, colds and flu usually start with a characteristic “cough” that seems as if your dog has something stuck in his throat. If your dog coughs, keep him home and watch for further symptoms. The “old” viruses associated with canine cough – as opposed to the new flu – include coughing and a low-grade fever. The new flu has a higher fever, and nasal discharge."

Im not completely sure on this but I think you can tell by the gunk in the corner of their eyes. Plus I have had dogs to actually cough alot when sick. They also may not eat regularly or will drink lots of water or not alot. You maybe able to tell in the way he is acting. Is he usually very hyper and now is just sleeping alot. You may want to call your vet and tell him the symptoms your dog is showing.

My dog has seasonal allergies. As a safety precaution give the dog, childrens benadryl, the liquid is the easiest, or just stuff the pill in some cheese or meat. DO NOT give the dog anything stronger than a children's medicine of anything unless it's prescribed.

He usually will sneeze and have runny eyes and not feel well and maybe cough.
But a bad cough is also a sign of heart problems, so if he's doing that, get him to a vet.
