Any hints or tips for alleviating the symptoms

The thing is guys, I don't grind my teeth at night or clench my jaw......I was 'blessed' with rather an odd jaw structure

Thanks for all your input so far - it's a bummer of a condition, isn't it!?

It Is called TMJ or Temporal Mandibular Jointitus. I have had it for 8 years. It can be treated by a dentist that specializes in TMJ Disorder. Make sure if you find a specialist that he makes you a splint to prevent grinding or clinching while you sleep. Ask the dentist for recomendations before you give them all your money. They should be well versed in treatment, Try using a heat pad when you have pain. Or try using a cold ice pack. Also advil is good for the pain. I found that after the splint my dentist had to co-abrate or grind down my bite so it would not be a problematic. If you live near Bakersfield, Ca there is a great dentist Named Dr. David Bae. He works wonders. Good luck and God Bless.

Oh dear Rebecca... I have outright broken hard mouth pieces at night and chompped right through the soft ones made for me. I've given up on mouth pieces...I ruin them and they are soooooooo expensive. I have tried to work on behavioral modification (which at first sounded like a bunch of hoo-ie to me); but as the years go by, I think it is helping. You can actually train yourself to catch yourself clentching your jaws together when you are awake. The modification is to learn to isolate the muscles that are clentched and release them in to relaxation....For a long time, you will go right back to clentching them unconsciously...don't be discouraged. It takes time. It will eventually become a normal thing for your to recognize that you are clenching your teeth and will learn how to release them. This helps immensely in the daytime... Night time is another story. Have not conquered that yet. Best wishes. See your dentist or family physician for a referral for biofeedback training for the daytime anyway. It will make a difference for you.

Yup ... not good ay. I massage inside my mouth up the back. The muscle that joins the jaw together. That seems to help.
