I just bought one for my 2 kitties today. The smarter one is tempted to chase it, but is more of an observer. The other, who is a little skittish, LOVES it. She's a little emotionally unbalanced. I've used it on and off a few times tonight. Now it's her bedtime and she's laying on the floor, alert, waiting for that light to come back. (Reminds me of the Brady Bunch episode with the fake flying saucer). Is playing with the laser with them mean?? Too confusing for them?
(And don't tell me not to point it at their eyes...duh)

A laser pointer makes the greatest cat toy! My cat perks up the second he hears the click of the button on the pointer. I make the dot move erratically, climb walls, hide under things, the posibilities are endless for entertaining your cat! I had a lost cat (was obviously loved) wander up to my balcony so I fed her and played with her, using my laser pointer. I wanted to show my neighbors how cats react to laser pointers, and why they may randomly see a red dot through the window. The cat ran back and forth endlessly across the balcony chasing that red dot!
The best thing about laser pointers is 1-most cats go nuts trying to "catch" the dot, and 2- its easy, and requires little effort! I just sit on the couch, and point, making the point "do" various things that cats love. Its not mean and you aren't confusing your cats, she is just not ready to stop playing just yet!

I don't think it is mean.
Some cats will lose interest in a toy they can't physically catch but others get enough enjoyment out of the act of chasing that they'll go after it for hours on end if you let them.
Cats like moving around and getting exercise. Mine somethings just does laps around the house when he's too hyped up. Best to get it out of their system with play!

It is not mean, it is actually a good idea. It gives them exercise. And it makes them aware of their of there surroundings. I play with my cat all the time. She likes it when she sees that I have the lazer in my hand and she notices it. And starts to walk to it. And I turn it off. It makes her mad, because she finially found the source. It is really good exercise and buides a strong bond between the two of you. Have fun!

My kitty does the same thing. And he defiantly jumps at the sound of keys too. It's hilarious. I don't see why there would be a problem with it. A friend of mine made one of my cats jump into a wall one time though. Don't do that. it's sad. :(

I have one for my cat and she comes running every time she hears the chain on it jingle. :p Recently I got one that you can attach to their collar and it points in the direction they're looking. It confused her, she'd just sit and stare at the red dot on the wall. I guess she just likes it better when someone's actually pointing it. But it could be entertaining for other cats. :)

My kitty plays with rope (yellow is preferable), or anything that moves. it also like playing with shiny things like keys, my wallet chain, etc. But what it really likes is the toy I made: two soft ball tied with rope, and bell on both balls. My kitty always bring that toy to sleep with.

We got one for our cat and he loves it if he even so much as hears the little jingle of the key chain it's on no matter where he is in the house or how fast asleep he is he will be at your side in seconds. I saw one at Petcetera one that you turn on and it spins by itself but wheres the fun in that. How can something that much fun for them be mean, don't worry her adrenaline rush will wear of sooner or later.

Don't point it at their eyes but other than that, it's cool. Great exercise for them to chase "the dot".
