would i be able to dual boot windows vista and xp on the same hard drive, and if i could how would i go about doing that?

You can only do it on the same hard drive if you format and partition the hard drive into two partitions. Then, install XP onto one, and install Vista on the other. When your computer starts, Vista will give you an option to boot it or an "older operating system."

you will need just another empty primary partition on your hard disk to install vista on, you can use gparted live cd if your hard disk does not have one.
