A couple of friends went from Alaska to the Yukon by car and they told me that the customs officers were really rud. Then I friend went from New York to Montreal and told me the same thing. I was planning on going from Alaska to Edmonton by car and I was really afraid because I'm southamerican (not mexican for all of you as*holes wondering) but when the customs guy saw my passport was really friendly and polite. I don't know. Somebody with a similar experience?

Having crossed the U.S./Canadian border well over a hundred times in the past five years, i have had only two experiences that could at all be called negative, and in neither of those were the customs officers truly rude ... just skirting the edge of it, lol! Most often, I have been treated with total respect and politeness, even the instances of being brought into immigration and further questioned.
My husband, going the other direction, into the U.S. as a Canadian, has been less fortunate. Several times he has been treated less than politely, and once was treated so rudely that we lodged a complaint against the customs officer. (being called names, ridiculed, and baited, even as he maintained a calm demeanor himself .. the calmer he was, the madder SHE got).
And, for the questioner, not all Americans are a$$4oles about mexicans .... I, and everyone I personally knows, respects all persons, including mexicans, and would never jump to the conclusion that a Latin appearing person must only be from Mexico. I do understand though, that your attitude must come from plenty of negative experiences, and I apologize to you on behalf of my fellow countrymen.

I love going to Canada. I never really had a problem crossing the border. Sometimes I don't even have to show ID. Only time I ever had a problem in Canada is at the duty free stores getting the taxes back. Those are some of the rudest people I have ever came in contact with in any country! I always spend at least 5k everytime I enter the country and only stuff bought for over $50 can he counted so I do spend alot in taxes and like to have some back on the $50 and over! Love Niagara falls area strip clubs!

There are only a small percentage of Americans disliked by customs officers. Those are people that think they can carry concealed weapons in Canada, and loudly insist they have a licence to carry, and those that think they are somehow singled out and threaten to call their Congressmen. For the most part, border officers of both the US and Canada do their jobs well, and professionally, and treat all people decently.

I hate to admit it but it but some of them aren't to nice to Canadians either. Lately I have noticed it is both Canadian and American customs that are really uptight with anyone from Canada or North America. I don't know why that is. Maybe they are overworked and underpaid or something. I am glad they were polite to you though. I have to go back home to Canada soon and I am dreading that part of the trip.

We only give what we get back. You would not believe how ignorant and rude Amoricans are. They think they are the center of the universe. While we are just trying to do our job, they get so snotty and give us attitude. Canadians are really nice and polite people, hence the reason we can wear our Canadian Flag on our luggage anywhere in the world and get respect. Amoricans cannot. Your experience was the norm because you were probably respectful and polite.

I live in Michigan, and we go to Canada quite often through Detroit/Windsor area. I have never had a bad experience due to my being American. I have had to deal with grumpy Customs Officers, but it was more like they were just having a bad day.

I've never had a problem in Canada.
The only time they get cranky is when you travel for business. They think you are some kind of "free sample" mule who's going to be passing out GST-free goods on the corner.

My ex is a Canadian Customs Officer and they are never rude to folks coming in...as a rule...the Americans you are speaking of may have just experienced somebody having a bad day...CCRA agents have a duty to treat all people equally...it may have been the preception of these folks you know...a lot of people do not welcome some of the intrusive types of questions CCRA agents have to ask...believe me, they don't like asking them, either...

Id have to say, "No"........ the Canadian officers dont dislike Americans anymore than the American officers dislike Canadians. I, myself, have had more than my share of trying to enter the USA........ I am Canadian. Eventually I DO get in, but I usually have to go through some sort of vehicular search. They dont find anything but they are usually rude in their searches.
