My 13 y/o neutered male cat started peeing on everything about 2 years ago & has ruined DVDs, CDs, books...I finally had to tape plastic bags to my cabinets & bookcases but he even pees on those. I had him to the vet for an exam & was informed that there was nothing wrong with him, other than the fact that he "might" suffer from anxiety, being that I had recently begun taking night classes & he was "upset" by my being gone. He was prescribed liquid Paxil but refuses to eat any food that I mix it in to & I stopped squirting it into his mouth because the long, thick strands of saliva hanging from the corners of his mouth made him look like "Cujo." I do have another (neutered) male cat (6) but "Mr. Pee-Pee Puss" didn't start peeing on everything until 3 years after I brought the other cat home. I do not play favourites & give each equal "Momma & Kitty" time. The vet says my cat is healthy, but I'm running out of patience & plastic trash bags. What can I do to stop this behaviour?

1) Find a better vet. No vet should prescribe antidepressants to a cat. Where the heck did he get his license?
2) Clean, Clean, Clean. Cats frequently return to area that they have already been. You may not be able to see or smell it, but the cat still can. You can use a product that I used after my cat had a infection and peed in the corner. It's called Petastic (http://www.petastic.com). If you look at the website it will give you great tips. There is a link on the side just for cats. I think there is also a coupon. Avoid using harsh chemicals like bleach. This is harmful to your pets. Petastic is also approved by the ASPCA.
3) Try Feliway (www.feliway.com) l He might just be nervous. This is a great product and I used it when we moved and whenever we take our cats on vacation with us. It is natural and has no side effects either.
4) You should keep the box Clean and have at least 3 inches of litter in it at all times. I won't use commercial brands with dyes in it because it is bad for your cat and the environment. I use a GREAT biodegradable cat litter called Swheat scoops (www.swheatscoops.com) It is the best thing since running water. Check it out.
But I would get another vet regardless, this vet sounds like a quack.

The vet that said nothing was wrong with him? His he the vet that prescribed a medication? Hope you did not pay for this. Not a very good vet. You might have to start putting clean litter in his box everyday. Alot of cat owners don't know about this. Yes a cat litter box should be changed everyday, which is expensive for most cat owners. Also your cat may suffer problems if the litter box is moved to a different area to often. Make sure it is hidden where he knows no one can see him when he goes to use the litter box. And scooped everyday. Have to look at this way. If we did not flush our toilets for a week would we use it? No.
P.S. And because you brought in another cat you have to have two litter boxes. Your cat is urinating because its upset that another cat is using the same box. I had same problem and had to get two litter boxes. Its a pain but it worked. Agree with lauraless also. Stay with the same brand of litter. Purina litter is the best brand for cats. Some have purfumes that your cat may not like. But changing brands often can cause this problem.
Good-luck.

my sisters cat had the equal quandary, he had only recently obtained a puppy and moved to a brand new apartment, we had been instructed that he used to be unsatisfied and ignored his prior proprietor. We had been additionally instructed that the cat hated the puppy and wasnt familiar with the brand new apartment. This would all simply be the cat hating the puppy or probably all he demands is a couple of new toys to make him blissful, the cat we had used to be constant so the vet didnt feel he used to be spaying, finally we did do away with the cat we had however dont stop on ur little man, check out a few further awareness or cleansing ur flooring and furnishings to wholly get rid of the puppy scent

My vet said he could give a hormone shot that would cost about $30, but usually stopped the spraying for several weeks or months in neutered male cats. I don't know the name, but hopefully your vet could find it. I'm considering it if the other things I'm doing don't work

My male cat also started this behavior....change to unscented cat litter an voila...he will use the box again. Most commercial litters have too much perfume in them and cats don't appreciate it very much.My poor cat was actually sneezing because the brand I had been using suddenly became new and improved...perfume added.I use the cedar litter and have had no problems since...it is called cederific.

It sounds like marking behavior.
Try Feliway. There is a spray bottle and a plug-in variety. It stops them from spraying by making use of the marking pheromones that cats use to mark territory without the smell. It's also used to calm cats down.

There's nothing you can do, that's why I would never get a male cat. I would just get rid of the cat, It's not worth it to keep a cat that's going to ruin all your stuff and stink up your house. I love cats but not the ones that spray.!!! Anyone that would keep a cat that sprayed in their house is an idiot!!!!
