I have and will always stop to pick up stray dogs. Most of the time in my case they have just ran away from their owners. Shame on the rest of you who said they would only pick them up if they didn't "look sick or diseased". They probably need vet care if they look sick. HELLO!! No wonder people in this world are so **cked up. Would you pick up a sick looking person if you saw them wandering around on the highway? I would. People have no compassion for on another anymore. It makes me sick.

I have done it many many times! It's amazing to me how many people will turn a blind eye to an animal running at large. It's a simple thing to call the police when they're spotted which I have done.I've also put strays in the car and brought them home and notified animal control who promptly come collect them.
And I've sat with dogs that have been hit by cars while waiting for animal control to take them too many times to count.Regardless of the weather to make sure they did'nt drag themselves back into harms way.
And I've tried very hard to get plate numbers of anyone I see has hit an animal and driven off without a care so they can be charged with negligent driving as well as animal abuse.
Most people don't realize that in Illinois they can and will be charged and fined for this as well as owe the owners of the animal they hit for medical bills or the purchase price of the aniamal should it be destroyed.Don't know what the laws are elsewhere.

If the dog looked okay I might pick it up, but I defiantly would call my local Animal Control to come get it. I do not intend to sound cruel, but I have French Bulldogs (show dogs) which I have thousands of dollars in and I really cannot risk losing one of my dogs to an illness that they got from me bringing home a stray. I do volunteer at my local shelter often and work closely with my local breed rescues.

I have two dogs and four cats, the only one that was not acquired through this manner, she was from my local humane society. One had been abused, two were days away from starvation. I have not picked up any strays lately, but would not hesitate to do so again. These animals do not deserve to die on the street. They never asked for this and have no way of fixing their circumstances themselves.

I do- I dont bring it in my car but I take a lead rope that I always have in my car and hang the rope out the window- going slow- I go up to the next closest house- usually it is their farm dog that ran away.
I would not suggest picking up a stray unless you know what to look for in behavioral signs and know that it probably has fleas before you bring it into your car.

I have done it several times. In fact, one of the best dogs that I have ever had, I picked him up off the side of the road. He was starving, weighing about 40 pounds instead of about 70. I normally try to find the owner, if not I either keep them or try to find a good home.

I have, and I would do it again. I looked all over the neighborhood to see if anyone lost a new pup since she was wearing a flea collar and had puppy breath. No one wanted to claim her, so she lived with me until it was time to go to the Rainbow Bridge. I never regretted picking her up. She was one of the best dogs I ever owned and I would do it all over again.

My family seems to be the house all stray animals go to. We often pick one up or call animal control if it is behaving weird or too large to control before going to the humane society.

i would not approach a stray dog, but I do call the police if I see one and we have gotten our dogs from shelters, so I pick them up in a roundabout way.

We have done it lots of times. Just this past Sunday we picked up 3 pups that had been dumped near our house. They are beautiful dogs. We will vet them and find them wonderful homes.
