New York is awesome- as long as you can afford it! It is the best! However, if you are able to get a dorm- do it. It will be much more reasonable then living in the NYU environs (where rent is typically $1600 and up for a tiny studio apt). Once you get used to NYC you can then go to the outer parts (like Williamsburg, Astoria, etc.). You will not find a better city for restaurants, sight-seeing, culture, music, nightlife, etc. Also one of the lowest violent crime stats in the entire country. Very safe- one of the lowest murder rates in the world (for a big city). BTW- what is the "south side" (from above)? I live here- there is no "south side" to worry about- it is wall st. and the financial district?!!!

New York City is the best but it takes some time to get used to. When I first moved there, I found it to be crowded and bustling and filled with rudeness. After a few months, I fell in love with the city. There's so much to do and see every single night, so many restaurants, so much culture, parks, museums, Broadway, tons of fun young people and you never have to worry about driving or parking (don't bring a car). I lived there for 7 years and those were the best years ever!

new york city is the best city in the world. theres so much to do, things to see. its so easy to get around, you dont need a car. nyu is a good school and job opportunities in nyc are plentiful.
however, as a student, it is very expensive to live here. if you can afford it, its a great place to be. youll love it. i dont know where youre from, but you also need to be 'street smart' and youll be fine. there are always people around, and i never feel unsafe. but at the same time, be smart, travel in groups, etc. keep your eyes and ears open at all times and youll be ok.
ps. i have an awesome six figure salary that wouldnt be possible in any other city!!
good luck.

There are two kinds of people ..those who like big cities and those who like the calm small city life. Both have alot to offer, I for one would chose the big city and it is better for youth. I live in LA but I have been in NY and loved it so go for it it would be a great experience.

It's crowded, and people are constantly moving. It's a busy city that never sleeps, you never have a chance to rest much.
I've been there with unfinished business and loved it. It's deffinately where I belong. However, I'd stick with San Francisco more.
Well, good luck there.

p.s. Watch out for the south side.

It's a huge city with equally huge opportunities. If someone else is paying (college dorm, etc) go for it.
LIving in NYC and paying rent/mortgage is very depressing because it's soo freaking expensive.
It's a very frantic city. be prepared and enjoy the experience.
