I am wondering if a 30-30 lever action rifle would take down a wild boar better than let's say a 30-06 bolt action at 100 yards, no wind and straight shot?

Bound's hubby here:

A .30-30 lever action rifle can be adequate for hunting hogs. Personally, I feel the .30-06 would give you more flexibility with a wider variety of bullets that could be had for your hunting situation. Whether I used a lever action or a bolt action rifle, would depend more upon the terrain than anything else. For me, I can get off a quicker follow-up shot in thorny and brushy conditions with a lever action. Also, a bolt action could get out of battery faster when crawling or walking through alot of brush and undergrowth.

Good luck.

Not 'better;' the .30-06 is ballistically superior. A .30-30 with a 20" inch barrel may 'wield' better than a .30-06 with a 26" barrel, but even a .30-06 with a 16" barrel is a better boar gun than a .30-30.

The .30-30, .44 Mag carbine and .35 Remington lever action are about the minimum calibers for the 250+ lb. boars. Head shots are always best with these beasts. I've seen 400-500 lb. boars take multiple body hits with a .30-06 (16" barrel semi-auto) and still run. The body gristle flattened the '06 rounds like nickels just under the skin. Took a head-shot to drop him.

Some of the newer ammo from Hornady (Leverevoltion) and allowed better bullets to be used in lever actions. At 100 yards the 30-30 will do the job. But the 30-06 is a more potent round and therefore capable of a more sure one-shot stop on the hog.

Better than a 30-06? No. Adequate for 100 yard hogs? Absolutely! In the brush, I'd rather have a light 30-30 with 20" barrel and iron sights than a heavy, long, scoped '06. A 30-30 is adequate for all game in the lower 48 states. It has taken all game in North America but the shooters were EXPERT shots.

Bullet placement is paramount. A good hit with a 30-30 is better than a miss with a 30-06.

There are a lot of opinions on guns, if you chose a 30-30, it will do what you are wanting. The 30-06 is a calibre that has been around for 100 years, it is tried and true round also. The choice is yours, if you could find someone with some diffrent guns to shoot to see what you like before you buy if you are new to the sport. In my personal collection I have .243, 30-06, 300Win Mag,444Marlin, and then some. As I said earlier the choice is yours. Good Luck and have fun.

The '06 is definitely more powerful and more versatile, but the hog will never know the difference. I've shot hogs with bolt guns from 6 mm Rem. to 8x68S, but as often as not I'll grab the old lever gun (my choice is normally a model 71 Win. 348, but that's just an overgrown 30-30). My little brother goes with his 30-06. Personal choice.

No, the 30-06 is more powerful by a significant margin, the 30-30 is just slightly faster for a follow-up shot if you need it. I don't know too much about hunting wild boar, but I've heard they're pretty tough. You might want to consider sticking with the bigger gun.

You could get the best of both worlds, though. Just buy a Browning BLR, it has a tubular magazine that allows it to handle pointed cartridges like the .30-06 that most other lever-actions can't.

Either will work fine and I doubt a hog is going to tell the difference between dead and dead. Both are quite acceptable at 100 yards. I would opt for the heavier 170 grain in 30/30 and the 165 to 180 in 30/06.

Either one will do the job. I have shot deer with both, and there's not much difference. If you're out past 100 yards, the six is the better choice. Are you scoped or open sights?

I personally would go with the six because most of my lever actions are old and do not have the hammer block feature, the bolt action still has a safety on it.

The 30-06 is by far superior in both Velocity and energy at 100 yards.
30-06 = 100 yards velocity is 2211 fps Energy at 100 yards 1626 lb
30-30 = 100 yards velocity is 1682 fps Energy at 100 yards 941 lb
This comparison is with a 150 grain bullet.
That equals 529 fps faster with 685 lb of energy at 100 yards
That add up to a lot of difference.
