where someone could live with cheap room and board, like a community house, in the L.A area...i'm from toronto and wanna get away for a while and explore different scenes
any type of info would be much appreciated

Your question needs clarification. How long are you going to be here? What area do you wish to stay in?
There are youth hostels, funished apartments, extended stay hotels, maybe rent a room in someone's house or apartment, even pitch a tent in a campground.
Put a post on Craigslist.
And btw, there's no such thing as cheap housing in LA, unless you live in your car.

If it's cheap, it may be in an unsafe area. Something to think about. If you find Oakwood apartments anywhere, they are considered pretty cheap, for short and long time stays.
I wouldn't trust a communal arrangement unless you know each person very well. You can get ripped-off and they can disappear with your stuff.

Why not try some of our youth hostels...very affordable if you don't mind rooming with other people. I know they do have time limits..not sure how long you can stay at each but you could move from place to place until you find something more permanent.

Try living in "Palms" area, which is near Culver City. Real affordable housing, and not as bad as living in "The Valley"
