Of course, but most of the time, the friendship is not as genuine as it was before you started dating.
But yeah, if you were truly in love once and the falling out wasn't bad, then it's definitely possible.

it depends alot on how the friendship was before it became a friendship
personally, in most cases i believe to let your ex be your ex. you have other friends. lol
but i mean it can work out, as a friendship that is, a good rule of thumb to go buy is take the amount of time your relationship was, 6 months for example, and 6 months after the break up, you should know if you'll be good friends or not
