I am just wondering. Lots of people in my family are allergic to amoxicillin, would penicillin affect them the same? Sorry if anything is spelled wrong.

this is a VERY interesting question. all drugs are different, some in the tiniest ways. it does not really matter if two or more drugs are within the same family because their molecular structures are just a touch different. so you do not know until you try. for example, organic vitamins are better than not organic because of the enzyme activity around the organic molecules. the same goes with penicillin. ampicillin is the "copy" of penicillin, and for me, i can take penicillin, but not ampicillin. doctors did not understand these things or even believe them in the past because they were taught that a molecular copy of a drug is exactly the same as the organic type, which is not correct. ampicillin is different too than amoxicillin. people that are allergic to all drugs in that family might do okay with sulpha antibiotics. you can ask your doctor to tell you what allergic reactions you should watch out for. but often, it's a good idea to talk to your pharmacist--they seem to know even more about the molecular structures of drugs in the same families but of a different name.

one thing is for certain: if we take antibiotics without having real reason for them (such as trying to cure a viral cold, not a bacterial cold INFECTION), or if we do not take them as prescribed (unless you have a reaction, in which case you call your doctor immediately to get a different one), we run a great risk of coming down with infections that should be, but are not, sensitive to any antibiotic. in that case, you just might die.

There are two kinds of penicillin's. there is penicillinase-sensitive of which Amoxicillin falls into and penicillinase-resistant. If you are allergic to systemic penicillin's, it is more than likely you are allergic to all types. A good rule of thumb is if it ends in CILLIN don't take it. I am allergic to penicillin luckily there are many many other antibiotics to replace it.

you best bet would be to ask a pharmasit but my understanding is that the answer is yes. I'm not positive but I'm fairly certain that amoxicillin is actually just a different form of penicillin.
i would definetly let both the doctor and pharmacist know about the penicillin allergy, and be on the look out for any signs of an allergic reaction
my sister is allergic to sulfa drugs and even though she told the hospital that before her surgery they still gave her morphine (which is a sulfa related drug) poor kid broke out in hives and was even more miserable, luckily they caught it quick

NO penicillin and Keflex can present the same reaction. My Medic alert is for ALL CILLINS & KEFLEX following a severe anaphylactic reaction to one amoxicillin.

NOOOOOOO!!!! It would not be safe. AmoxiCILLIN is in the peniCILLIN family. Contact a doc for a safe antibiotic for this person to take.

Yes, it certainly could. They should also stay away from Augmentim which has a penicillin in it. Drug allergies do not get better over time, they usually worsen. Not something to mess around with.

Absolutely! They belong to the same drug family, so your relatives would experience the same allergy symptoms.
