A wonder of the world! Where else in the world can you trek through snow up a volcano, go whale watching, bargain with the locals for their art, take a walk through the rainforest, and white water rafting all within a 6 hour bus ride from the capital? As for safety concernts, just be smart and you'll be fine. In general, the people that find themselves in harm are not making the best decisions at the time (I lived there for 2 months and the only crime I heard of happened against very drunk tourists traveling alone or with another person at the wee hours in the morning ). Travel in groups, be friendly, use caution and you'll be fine!

As a country Ecuador is beautiful, I have been there couple of times and really enjoyed the food, the people, the beaches etc. however over the years I believe it has become a very dangerous country, alot of violence, and corruption, I guess the government changes has not helped.........I would not go back there as a visitor anymore.
