Two of my cats have started doing that as well. They just refuse to drink out of their cat bowl. And it's funny, I have several tanks set up, and they always do it out of this one tank in particular. Not sure if it's just easier to get to or if it tastes better.... It's not the best for them to drink, read some of the labels on the bottles of dechlorinator and other chemicals. Not good stuff. But, they won't get immediately sick, at least mine haven't in the past few months. And, I really have no idea how to make them stop doing it, because you really can't cover that filter area with anything. And being that we're dealing with cats, I doubt anything would really keep them out anyway lol. One thing I'm going to try here soon, is buying one of those fountain water dishes, where it's a constant stream of water flowing-since cat's seem to prefer drinking their water that way, which is also why I'm guessing they like the water in the filter output area.

as for parasites or worms, no! The parasites that dogs and cats carry are species specific and are not the same that a fish would have. Some fish carry a certain type of tapeworm, but it isnt the kind that cats can contract. So you are in the clear!

Honestly, the only thing they are really gonna catch while drinking from the fish tank is your fist! But to be on the safe side, you might want to discourage them from doing so. Try using a screen to cover the tank(s). This will also make it impossible for the cats to accidentally fall in.

No, they will be fine. At the most, they'll terrorize the fish some or try to catch one. But no worries about parasites.

I read a while ago on aquariacentral.com to keep pets away from fish tank water - drinking it will cause respiratory problems.

Generally speaking animals can't get any disease from an animal who is a different species.
