It's different for everyone, depending upon your interests. I suggest working with your local volunteer center. They can connect you with a wide range of volunteer opportunities and non-profit agencies that meet real community needs. I work through my local Hands On Network affiliate on various projects with children and teens. They provide one of the best services to match you with one-time, short-term, or long term opportunities:

Here's another link to help you find your local volunteer center:

If no center exists in your immediate area, try your local chapter of the United Way:

Good luck!

I started volunteering at Planned Parenthood about four to five years ago and they have since hired me on full time. They are a really great organization to volunteer for and have many opportunities. I've also, in the past, volunteered for a local woman's shelter as well as a child's advocate in court (you have to be 21 to do that).

In Asia: Afganistan but you have to tread carefuly and maintain emergency back-ups
In Europe: France. You wll learn a lot and currently, volunteerism is flourishing here.
In Africa: South Africa, where novel strategies are being designed and implemented for HIV/AIDS victims
In Latine America : Peru
In Australia; The desert region, working on indegenous culture and involving with the natives.
In Antartica : with a good base camp to observe and study parametrix of global warming.
There are many places.

I'm trying to volunteer in new Orleans, and it is hard to find a place. They all want you to pay for food and lodging, kind of an oxymoron ,you think.

HIV/AIDS victims I guess - they need support - or you can join Prison program - many prisoners want outsiders to send them Letters, gifts etc. Check http://www.writeaprisoner.com/
These people remain isolated from outside world and would really appreciate your help - many of them are there fro petty offences and one day, they release and be your nice friends too
