Tom, I'm sorry, but you are mistaken. I have an '04 Jeep Grand Cherokee. They're still in production now. I love my Jeep and have had no problems at all out of it. It has 60,000 miles and is still going strong! Cherokees are classics ~ they look great at any age.

I had two, 1999 and 2001 the last year they made them. My son had a 1999 that he got 160,000 miles out of it without serious trouble. Try to get one around 2000, they are still good. There are so many after market parts for this model you can do lots with them. Also, Jeep screwed up big time when they stopped making this. The Liberty never did replace it, and they lost thousands of sales from companies and government agencies that used the old Cherokee for transporting staff and goods. After the crappy Liberty came out and failed, they brought out the Commander that looks a lot like the old Cherokee but they priced it at about 30K, out the reach of most Jeep folk. In December 2006 they started production of the Jeep Patriot which is a downsized copy of the old Cherokee with a kicking four cycliner, 25/30 gas mileage and an available off road 4WD system. Looks just like the old Cherokee only smaller and more efficient. If your heart is set on the older version stay around the 2000's if you can just for maintenance value. Good luck.

id got with the 90s ones because they have way more mods for them then the older cherokee with the non high output 6. everything else is pretty much the except in the ones before they went to the grand cherokees those ones look rounder but still have the same styling and the inside looks more like the TJs then the older cherokees. you can still get those for cheap but not as cheap as the 88s and what not those are way cheap my bro got one for 350 and it ran but 6 grand will definitely get you a nice cherokee for sure.

I have a 93 Cherokee Country, it has about 150000 miles on it and it's still very reliable. I've done some work on it, but just the basic stuff like new brakes and I modified the springs (I put springs from an 86 1-ton Chev under it) I've never had any problems with it, it has the 6 cyl HO engine.

I have a jeep cherokee 1994, second owner with 235,000 miles, it had 160,000 hiway miles on it when I bought it. so far so good, only problem major is a broken door hinge on drivers door that will cost 200 to get welded. just change the oil, keep it tuned up, basic maintenance. and flush and fill the radiator. I'd say 94-96 are a good cheap bet.

This is a great forum for Cherokees. Search around a bit and you will see what years are better and why. I think the 91 and older had the bad ABS system if I remember correctly
