My pup has a broken paw and the vet put on a splint. It lasted about a week and she managed to chew it off. We keep a sock over it to try and prevent this but she figured out how to get it off. The new splint was put on monday and it's already off again. What can I do to keep her from removing it? It's taped on with that bandage tape stuff, which I guess is really fun to chew. We keep her confined, and we try to watch her but it only takes a few minutes for her to chew it off.... Any ideas???

try making it unsavory to chew, with a pet deterrent like sour apple or something. also, if he really won't stop chewing, you can get him a lampshade collar that prevents chewing -- or, this web site: www.funstufffordogs.org sells an inflatable collar that does the same.

The vet should have put a funnel/cone around the pups neck to stop the chewing.
You should call him and let him know the dog is chewing on the splint and has chewed it off! I don't know if you can buy the funnels at the pet store or not but give it a try.
Hope this helps

The splint might be uncomfortable for your puppy to wear. try to keep moisture out of it, and if your puppy still keeps trying to chew it off, go to your vet and get a cone for its neck that prevents your puppy from biting its splint off.

if she keeps chewing at it, talk to your vet about putting a cone around her neck. you can get them in different sizes and most pet stores carry them. basically all it is a piece of plastic, like a collar that blocks her from chewing on her legs. it doesn't hurt the dog, but allows the part to heal with out her messing with it.

Elizabethan or 'E' collar to prevent her from being able to reach her foot, and/or bitter apple spray applied to the outer layer of the splint 2-3 times per day.

Call your vet and tell them this is happening. They will probably give you a plastic collar to put around her neck. Its a large tunnel looking thing that will prevent her from biting at her splint anymore.

I would get an E-Collar from your vet and some no-chew spray to use on the cast.

The satellite dish looking thing is called and Elizabethan Collar. They wont be able to reach it. Trust me socks and tape don't work.

Absolutely get yourself an "elizabethan collar" for your pup and the paw will heal without problems...Petsmart carries them or you can ask your vet

When our Pug broke his leg when he was a pup, they gave us one of those satellite dish looking things to put around his neck so he couldn't chew the cast.
