The experts say 12 - 15 years. Some can live over 21 years; one cat lived up to 36 years. It all depends on their environment, and how well cared-for it is. My cat, Rikki, just passed last year. He would've been 20 years old in December of this year.

The average life span for a domestic cat which is an indoor cat only is now 16 to 18 years.

I had one which lived to be 22 years old.

Unfortunately there are still some people who live in cities and allow their cats outside. Their life span is usually 7 to 8 years as they are vulnerable to traffic, predators and tormentors.

Please spay or neuter your cat and keep it indoors.

In my experience, a healthy, indoor cat will live an average of 15-20 years. I've met cats who were in their late teens to mid twenties and still going strong. Regular vet care and a good quality diet can keep a cat alive for a very long time.

In captivity, indoor cats typically live 14 to 20 years, though the oldest-known cat lived to age 36. Domestic cats tend to live longer if they are not permitted to go outdoors (reducing the risk of injury from fights or accidents and exposure to diseases) and if they are spayed or neutered. Neutered male cats cannot develop testicular cancer, spayed female cats cannot develop ovarian cancer and both have a reduced risk of mammary cancer.

Depending on how well it is cared for, that it is not over or under weight, on a well balanced diet a healthy cat can live up to and over twenty years of age.
