I read an answer on here before saying that the us military go on drives to get the numbers up, outside schools. I think that is true because I watched a documentary where they went into a school to recruit people. They encourage people who have failed at school, have no qualifications and are not very likely to get a well paid job. So in other words the military is full of young men who feel they have nothing else to give to society. If it is full of poorly educated people that nobody else would even want to give a job to, then there are bound to be a few mistakes. You wouldn't give them a job but you would give them a gun or a tank? I can see why it happens. I'm not saying that all men in the army are stupid but this is what I have read on here and on documentaries.
Oh dear I don't think anyone will agree on this one, everybody has a thumbs down. I agree with the post above me though. When you're in that situation, God knows what you would do. I'd be scared sh*tless and would probably cry. And by the way, I know plenty of boys my age who have joined the army because they didn't do well at school. It is a fact. My sisters boyfriend served in Bosnia and he actually told me this is why he joined the army and many of the people in his unit too. He earned quite alot of money whilst there.

Mistakes happen in situations like that. Misidentification of a potential target occurs more than it probably should. Thats why we use radio tags to identify our own. Unfortunately our equipment is only as good as the people using it. and mistakes can often be made there as well. Easy to criticize when you haven't been put in that situation. Sometimes its life or death and you have to make the decision at that moment.
I had to add this: If any of you think the military is full of dropouts Think again. Its full of HIGHLY EDUCATED men and women who give everything to our country, their entire lives sometimes to serve the greatest nation on earth. People who think that soldiers are stupid DO NOT DESERVE the respect and gratitude our soldiers deserve.

Pauline,
There is a huge diffrence between when the bullets are going away from you or toward you. Friendly fire is a reaction to fear

No incoming fire is ever friendly.
And it can't be BOTH lack of training AND abuse...so which (in your learned opinion) is the cause of so-called "friendly fire" incidents?

When rounds are in the air everything changes. It does not matter how much training you have or don't. You react by the will to survive, it's almost as if your body controls the mind. Not the mind over the body.

My old Dad once told me that during WW2 if the Germans were shooting the Brits would take cover, if the Brits were shooting the Germans would take cover ... if the Americans were shooting everybody took cover!

The fear at war is so encompassing that to secure oneself they don't bother to verify properly who the other party is.. and simply kill them.. and later repent.
