It would be a plus if there were pictures for each step, that way I have a better understanding of what I'm supposed to do, and also, a picture of the end result.

I find it easier to look at printed copy rather than stare at the screen.

If you are interested in good books, try www.amazon.com.
Look for the books link, then select used books.
I just got a great used book on Paint Shop Pro 8 which is what I have.

I have purchased many used books here, very low prices, and all I have received so far are in "like new" condition.
