My family travels long distances several times a year to visit relatives. We're so tired of the greasy, calorie-stuffed chain restaurants!
We usually get off the highway and go into a smaller town nearby. We look for a small restaurant with LOTS of cars parked in its lot. A bonus is if there are police and sheriff patrol cars in the restaurant lot!!
We've found amazing food at low cost that way. Family diners are the way to go!

The Sterns' relentless quest takes them all over the country - checking out the offbeat and often going off the beaten path to places as varied as Mom's Cafe at the crossroads in Salina, Utah, to the foremost knish palaces of New York. The Sterns are the authors of more than 20 books, including Roadfood, Eat Your Way Across the USA, and Chili Nation: The Ultimate Chili Cookbook with Recipes from Every State in the Nation, and also run the Web site roadfood.com."

Diners are an alternative but not if you want healthy. Pack a cooler (preferably one you can pug into your car battery) full of food that don't need to be heated up. But that wont go bad in a matter of minutes either. As you get low find out where the nearest grocery store or wal-mart is and stock up. Avoid sugary drinks because you will only get thirstier. Fruits and veggies, pre-sliced are cheap and they will fill you up.

Sit down restaurants. Get a chance to stretch your legs, read the local paper, etc.
