Have you ever gotten so burnt out you can't stand listening to music, let alone making it any more? Even if you're making good music, you're just sick of it? And not just for one night, I mean like months?

Yes, after I completed my Bachelor's Degree in music I was so tired of it I quit singing completely for years. It wasn't so much that I was tired of the music, but I was tired of the pressure that is inherent in academia. The pressure to be really good, the pressure to ALWAYS be working on your technique. However, after a few years of "real jobs" I realized that music really is my passion and I went back and completed my Master's Degree. I had to completely change my attitude, however, to get it done. I just did the best I could and tried my best to enjoy performing it. I have never regretted going back & I think the time off did me a lot of good both mentally and vocally.

That being said, after a full day of listening to music, practicing, etc., I often just want to come home and not listen to anything. I also do not like to be surrounded by musicians 24/7. Some music people like that, I am not one of them. My husband has nothing to do with music other than listening to the radio & I like that. It allows me a "break" from that world. I can have a life & interests outside of music.

Being a musician is so consuming - I think we often forget to nurture other talents or hobbies or interests. When I finally realized I could do both - be a musician during the day and come home and not be one - that is when I was the happiest.

Yes, musicians get sick of playing music - burned out so to speak. Garage players and 2-3 night a week players are less apt to get burned out. Imagine playing 5-6 nights a week with 3-4 hours rehearsal 2 or 3 times a week. To make matters worse, some players travel from one job to another and don't even know which town they are in. A very good friend of mine that played pedal steel guitar for one of the big name entertainers out of Nashville got so burned out from playing 5-6 nights in towns all over the world that he quit completely. He now drives truck. Most musicians are ready to go at it again after a month or so of rest from the rigorous grind. The music industry looks much better to an outsider than it does to the ones out there putting on the smile and playing their hearts out then riding those long miles to the next job. Also, sideman instrumentalists probably make a lot less than most people would think. Has it happened to me personally? Yes, twice.

that's an exceedingly interesting tale! in any case, i've got had some very interesting performances at the same time as sick. it type of feels that in case you're sick, your enjoying has a tendency to grow to be extra emotional, passionate, and lyrical. You variety of block out the objective audience altogether and concentration in simple terms on enjoying, exceedingly in case you're a million/2-delirious or feverish. It makes for some relatively "sick" performances. in simple terms my own opinion, haha. interesting fact: i've got got here across that coughing and working noses quit at once once you initiate up enjoying violin. this is very nearly mind-blowing. It does not ensue with piano, regardless of the incontrovertible fact that; i've got tried.
