If I'm looking at a 35mm film negative, how can I tell which side of the film has the emulsion?

The emulsion side is the "dull" side. Also, if you can read the info on the negative, the side you are viewing from is NOT the emulsion side.

If you look at the text on the edge of the film by the perforations, the letters/numbers will read normally on the base side and inverted/backwards on the emulsion side. [This is true of the image as well: it will read normally on the base side but reversed on the emulsion side.] The emulsion side is also generally more textured and duller than the base side.

Flash it under a light -- the dull side is the emulsion side. The shiny side is the backing.

If you are in the dark put the end of the roll between your lips -- the emulsion side will stick to whatever lip is touching it.

The emulsion side is always dull.
The acetate that it sits on is shiny.
